Learn musical improv from Laura Hall of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
Are you a musician who performs with an improv comedy group? If so, this book is for you! You'll also greatly benefit if you are a music director, improv team leader, improv teacher or coach, improv actor or singer, or just a hardcore Whose Line fan.
From the Foreword by Colin Mochrie
"On Whose Line, Laura supplies note-perfect music styles for Wayne Brady, Brad Sherwood, Chip Esten, Jeff Davis, et al, to shine on. But Laura's true genius is that she can make caterwaulers like me sound good and, more important, makes caterwaulers like me feel safe enough to try.
"Laura Hall is a damn fine musician, period. There is no musical style she isn't well versed in. With Laura you get experience, knowledge, and a teacher you can trust. What more could you ask for? So get reading, start playing, and have more fun than you're ready for."
"I'm a Laura Hall-ic!" -Chip Esten, Nashville, Whose Line Is It Anyway?
"I know and highly respect both Laura and Bob. I can't think of a better pair to teach you the fundamentals of musical improv." -Bill Chott, actor and founder of the Improv Trick
Laura Hall is an accomplished musician best known as the pianist on Whose Line Is It Anyway? She also stays busy recording film scores, writing musicals, leading improv workshops with her husband Rick, and performing with her Americana music trio, The Sweet Potatoes.
Bob Baker is a prolific author, musician, artist and actor, as well as an improv teacher and performer. Through his books and workshops Bob teaches creative people of all kinds how to get exposure, connect with fans, and increase their incomes.

I received this book a few days ago and finished it in the span of a few hours. I've been playing music for improv comedy (long-form and short-form both) for about three years. The first thing I'll say is, a book like this has been a long time coming. When I started playing, I quickly searched for any written material that might help me learn the ropes of being an improv accompanist. Save for a few sparse websites, I didn't find anything. (I now know that there's a book by Rick Overton about improv music direction which might likely have been what I was looking for, but that's not the point - besides, I found out about that book through the resources section of this book.)
That is to say, Laura Hall and Bob Baker could have written a book about nothing but how to play the Whose Line Hoedown and it still would have been a step in the right direction. So I was extremely pleased to find out that what they have provided is, in fact, an efficient and user-friendly guide to every step of this job; from the basic tenets of improv itself to run-downs of improv formats, musical styles, and song structures; basically, everything I would have wanted to know as a beginner.
If you're interested in this book then you're probably familiar with Laura Hall as the musician behind Whose Line Is It Anyway. And if you're just looking for a peek into the production process of that show, you're in luck, because she is more than happy to share anecdotes from it and lessons she learned along the way. As a Whose Line fan alone this book is worth the buy.
I will admit, as somebody who already has improv music experience I didn't learn that much that I didn't know before. That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend this to experienced improv accompanists and/or music directors. Even if it does teach this craft from the ground up, it does so through a voice you haven't heard before. It's always good to reinforce the skills you've already learned, and this book does so in a pleasantly simple manner. I told myself going in that I would skip over any parts of this book that felt too basic and, lo and behold, I ended up reading every word anyway - even the part explaining the concept of "yes and", a phrase that improvisers hear more than Colin Mochrie hears baldness jokes.
In conclusion, this book is very helpful and I will recommend it to anybody learning the ropes of this job. My improv professor back in college always lamented that it was hard to teach musical improv without a proper musician available to play them along. I have told him about this book and hopefully he will pass the word down to anybody looking to fill that role.

The Improv Comedy Musician The Ultimate Guide to Playing Music with an Improv Group Laura Hall Bob Baker 9780692753408 Books Reviews
Just finished this book, and it is great. Laura Hall and Bob Baker keep it simple but useful in their tips and suggestions. And as a guitarist wanting to enter into this field, it applies to ANY musician wanting to share their musical offering to support a comedy troupe.
I would highly recommend getting the karaoke CDs that Laura and colleagues put together - they are great to get you started with learning styles!
I have to make a confession. I'm not an improv artist, and not a musician, but I loved this book. It's just great advice on how to be a professional and leave a good impression. After reading this book, improvisers will know how to work more smoothly with their musicians, and musicians will know more about what actors need. I can't fathom anything scarier than having to sing improvisationally on stage, no less, so I'm pretty impressed by anyone wiling to try and appreciative of those who encourage and reward that effort. I recommended this book as a purchase for my library, but I strongly recommend that actors buy their own copy and take notes.
Well done, clever writing and good tips. Now all I have to do is learn how to play the piano.
Laura knows her stuff. Excellent
I came across this book while looking for a guide on general improv acting, which is something I'm relatively new to. Having been a guitarist for about 6 years and seeing Laura Hall's name on the front, I was instantly curious.
The book is split into three sections. The first focuses on the history and tradition of improv. An important read if you're new to the scene or haven't seen anything other than Whose Line is it Anyway. The second section focuses on the role of an improv musician. Given how much improv formats vary, there is no one size fits all to this. However, Laura and Bob do their best to cover the difference approaches in a concise way. Lastly, the third section is a sort of faq section. It includes some general tips and gives some insight into Laura's time on Whose Line.
I haven't seen any other books on the topic, so there's little to complain about. My only wish is that it was longer and could have included more in depth information about song structure. Especially about improvising with another musician. Overall though, I loved this book and would buy anything else that Laura Hall ends up writing.
Laura Hall is the best. No one else in the business comes close She can vamp in any style, and comedians trust her implicitly -- because she's always in tune with what they're doing. Highly recommended.
i've loved "Whose Line..." since i saw my first episode of the british version. but as a classically trained pianist, i find improv a stretch for me. Ms. Hall's book is informative, relevant, entertaining and most importantly--practical! great information that can yield results for those coming at it from my perspective as well as those coming from other instruments, experiences and achievement levels. i highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to explore music and it's use in live improvised comedy shows.
